Store

Mature chestnut trees are very nearly extinct and have not been available to craftsmen for over 50 years. Turners and woodworkers have been limited to using reclaimed chestnut only, for decades. Until now! Green chestnut is now available to you. We have two sources of premium green chesnut that allows us to make it available to our customers.

The American Giant

We have acquired the wood from the largest American Chesnut in the state of Oregon. It was over 130 years old with an 8-foot diameter. It was salvaged by Quiet Echo when its owner found it was too far gone to save. Over 130,000 pounds of wood has been secured and is now available to you.

The Mystery Grove

The second source of wood is from a newly discovered stand of chesnut, living undisturbed for decades. Quiet Echo farms is the home of The Mystery Grove. It comprises a mature stand covering forty acres of European/American hybrid. Many trees are over 100 years old and minimal harvesting of a few problem trees will yield tons of green chestnut.

AMERICAN BLANKS

We have a limited number of turning blanks available from the American Giant, a 130-year-old American chestnut. It was salvaged by Quiet Echo when its owner found it too far gone to save.

EURO/AMERICAN BLANKS

We sell Euro/American chestnut turning blanks and other highly-figured wood for turning and carving.

The American Giant

Quiet Echo has salvaged the wood from the largest American chestnut tree in the state of Oregon. The American Giant was removed for safety reasons and the wood became available. We are the only significant source of green American Chestnut blanks for turners, nationwide. We can provide anything from a three by three blank to a quarter ton log. We have crotch wood and elbows, as well as some unusual figuring from large stump slabs.

American Chestnut is a golden amber color, similar to oak in appearance but somewhat lighter weight. As it dries the color lightens, but if oiled the wood will darken again. It works and turns similar to oak, with moderate to low checking and warping.

A Lasting Legacy

Our intent is to offer this unique green American Chestnut to wood turners, carvers, and other specialty artists and craftsmen so that this tree will live on in the art and products created. Some of the wood is clear, straight and knot free, while much is figured and unusual. Large dimension American Chestnut turning blanks and slabs, nearly impossible to find, are now available. American Chestnut trees of this size are very rare anywhere. Having the chance to salvage this wood from the American Giant is an honor for Quiet Echo and an opportunity for artists and craftsmen everywhere.
